A life well lived

Charlotte Ann Macy Blumenstein (1923-2011)

Charlotte Ann Macy Blumenstein passed away peacefully at Sunnyside Care in Salem, Oregon on September 12, 2011 following a long battle against illness that took her health and memory. She was born July 17, 1923 to Otto and Belva Macy in Brighton, Iowa and was the seventh of eight children, all of whom have passed on before her.   At the age of 12, she traveled with her mother and sister to Salem, OR where she graduated from North Salem High School in with honors.    She met her husband, Robert Jr., in her Sophomore year and married after they graduated. She was known as “Charlie” to her friends, and later in life people called her “Char.” In 1956, Robert and Charlotte and children settled in their dream home at Niagara, Oregon.   She worked 26 years for the US Forest Service as a skilled timber management contract analyst, and was known for her talent of being able to competently estimate board feet in a standing tree, for talking lost people out of the wilderness via radio, and enjoyed applying her botanical knowledge in what she referred to as “bog slogging” as well as extensive backpacking by foot and horse into mountain wildernesses in Willamette and Wenatchee US National forests.

Charlotte was an avid bird watcher, knew her Latin in botany,  and loved to sing;  she laughed a lot, enjoyed telling  stories of her childhood, and played the piano and organ.  Charlotte pursued every opportunity to study new things such as marine biology, Spanish, golf, math, and natural history;  and,  advocating the same curiosity and desire to learn for her seven children.   In retirement, Bob and Charlotte enjoyed a move to their other dream location, the ocean community of Florence, Oregon.   She was at her husband’s bedside with family when he passed away in 2006.

Charlotte is survived by her seven children; Barbara Blumenstein, Carol Olson, Bruce Blumenstein, Frances Blumenstein-Garcia, Russell Blumenstein, John Blumenstein, and Amy Collen, as well as a legacy of beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren and a large extended family.

A  memorial  gathering to celebrate Charlotte’s life will be held on Saturday, October 15, at 11:00 at Scio  First Baptist Church in Scio, Oregon.   Donations in her memory to any organization that fights dementia is welcomed.
